It would be hard to find anyone nowadays that hasn’t set foot in Seoul, Busan or even Jeju while residing on the South Korean peninsula. Transportation is comfortable, there are a lot of foreigner-friendly places and everything can be booked through the internet!

Why would anyone even want to venture to unknown places where everything is made so much more difficult? This way of thinking, we know for a fact that this is how both a lot of Koreans and foreigners alike think about the countryside. And yet, a new trend has been rising since a few years here in Korea: Chonkance (촌캉스). Famous among young Koreans, the term is a combination of the words “countryside” and “vacation” and stems from the fatigue of city life and a deep desire for some slower, stable and ordinary days.

It might not be the miracle solution to make thousands of people want to visit or live there, but it did make some things easier for some of us! Local governments are welcoming visitors with open arms, locals are opening their hearts to them, and young people seem to be slowly recovering from what was eating them away in the big cities.

Factually, the problem is much bigger than the Korean countryside: worldwide, governments are helpless before cities that seem to slowly die away, with residents only getting older. With them is inevitably disappearing the heritage of entire regions. 

Here at SeoulHobbi, we are trying our best to take part in this project of countryside revitalization by organising one-day trips!
