Maybe you have heard of the French way of partying, maybe you are fond of the European summer vibe, or maybe it is that you have always dreamed of going to France. Then, I can assure you, this music festival is the perfect excuse to book your flight! 

Summer in Europe does have a special kind of vibe, and even as a French person, I kind of understand why so many people dream of experiencing it. Maybe it is because I am far away from home now, but France does seem like a dream sometimes. Could be that I get to see things through the eyes of people that love this country like I do South Korea. 

If you planned to visit France one day but don’t know where or when to begin, allow me to present you this one-day music festival that makes us sing and dance until the very end of the night: La Fête de la Musique. For a quick history lesson, it was a decision of one of French Culture Ministry’s directors Maurice Fleuret among others to officially celebrate music by making musicians (professionals and amateurs) gather in the streets to play their instruments. The first edition of the festival took place in 1982, over 40 years ago now!

And since then, every year at the beginning of summer on the 21st of June, in every corner of every city of France, you will find people listening to music with the volume a little higher than usual, in what seems like an invitation to share this marvelous thing that is music. But to be honest, it won’t be until the sun sets that one’s will be able to grab the atmosphere of this unique night.

No matter the clothes you wear or where you come from, this night is meant to enjoy what has always gathered people together: music! From classical music to hiphop with a little salt of rock ‘n’roll (let’s not forget EDM), there is no way you won’t be able to find something that makes your heart make a little dance. All you have to do is pace up and down the streets and find what fits you best. Wether it is bigger concerts organized by the cities, random artists perfoming at their balcony, groups playing for restaurants/bars or even trucks loaded of people blasting their speakers (you might be able to see it on Youtube if you search well), the idea is to enjoy free music outside with strangers. 

Adding to this already very good idea, the June sun that never seems to set, a restaurant’s terrace full of people (and of course the sound of the cicadas if you chose the best regions in France, which is the South….. I don’t make the rules!!), this night might very well make you never be able to leave France again.

For first goers, I would suggest you stick to big cities if being at the festival furious heart is what you like, even if smaller cities have their very own charm (and are way less crowded). The night programs are usually available on the cities official page/social networks but I would suggest you to allow yourself to discover new sounds and people, in the case you like to mingle!
